crantz: A sweet flying fairy. (happy fairy)
It was 57/13 degrees in my room this morning. My HAIR felt cold.

I passed my art class. My professor's notes were always 'great vision, excellent [so for the past ten minutes I've been trying to remember the word that means how you completed and assembled something and I think it starts with a C and it's just Not Coming so bear with me], very creative, very well thought out, perfect balance, I love it' and then giving me nothing higher than an 86 except one 89. I thought it was just me but he did it to all the other classmates he praised a lot too.

Oh well, at least I definitely passed.

I miss having mail, our post office has been on strike for weeks now because the higher ups at Canada Post refuse the union's very reasonable demands like 'pay the staff' 'don't fire everyone and rehire them as part time' and 'continue delivering to rural areas'

I'm so close to 50 updates on my webcomic! It's at HamsterWheel.Art! It's about doing pretty good at life if you were a hamster instead of a human. It's about relativity.

Some samples:

Comic. Two hamsters are talking while riding a skateboard past a human. They are discussing a class the yellow hamster has signed up for and is excited for. The yellow hamster slowly realizes he has signed up for a class that is every day at 9 am and the grey hamster points out he has an insomnia problem. As the skateboard rides into the air off a steep hill and the hamsters detach from the skateboard, the grey hamster says 'yeehaw'.

Comic. First panel: A guinea pig, Guineamom, is sleeping on a chair and Muezza that cat who is just a cat and not a person approaches with an intent look. Second panel she goes HEM and begins a panel breaking yowl. In the last three panels Hamham comes across her and instead of stopping her, proceeds to groove along to the jazz. Guineamom, exhausted, asks 'why'

Comic guide:'How To Draw Hamham!' After multiple failed attempts to draw a single blob, the second step is done (ears added) and then the third (eyes added) that are labelled 'cold black doll eyes' Done!

crantz: a drawing of batman in a pink dress with the word blush over his head (batingenue)
My birthday went off swimmingly. Go team. Cake was super tasty - Banana cake with strawberry filling. 'Banana split cake' she called it. I think if I get it again, I'm going to also ask for a layer of chocolate.

Violet messaged me around 8 just after I'd excused myself if I still wanted to do movie night we'd cancelled because it turned out she was up for it so we watched The Outsiders. The Outsiders is based off the novel by the same name by S E Hinton who swears that it is a deeply heterosexual tale so stop taking a queer lens to it.

As Violet and I watched these boys grapple with eachother semi nude, cuddle in the night, and talk about their feelings and the most vestigial girl ever showing up once in a while, we reflected that Hinton was right, truly there was no story more heterosexual than this tale of Johnny and his Ponyboy.

From Bluesky:

Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò‬ ‪[bsky.social profile] olufemiotaiwo

"when this person imagines power, do they start describing a toddler?" is a political litmus test I find myself applying more and more these days

QUOTEPOSTING:
‪Shiv Ramdas‬ ‪[bsky.social profile] nameshiv

"superman is basically a god" is a take I see more and more these days and it only makes sense if your entire conception of a god is "can smash shit when he wants"

So this got me thinking about how a lot of people cannot fathom the idea of anyone with powers like Superman who wouldn't immediately do selfish things and from there those questions that go around social media as a time waster that ask 'what would you do with a billion dollars/any wish you want' and then pre-emptively order people that they can't say something like eliminating debt, any form of helping people, etc.

And I'm wondering if it's related! There's this general impression from the people I'm mentioning that I think they believe if you say anything else, you're saying it to Look Good. And I think that generally makes less interesting stories because it has such a narrow view of the motivations of a wide swath of people. Of course there's people who'd go mad with power. And we see what real life rich people do every day that's cruel*. But there's also room for people who, given a great boon, doing something else with it.

Even if it's just my friend Moss's dream to open a tiny ungulate sanctuary.

*probably because you don't become that rich without certain prerequisites, but the point of the question is if the money was suddenly in your hands and not that you spent the last ten years exploiting workers.
crantz: A person (me) laying on the floor with a laptop and a line of dialogue above. I drew this. (writing: damnable panda)
I had a whole week I was supposed to be working on a writing project and I spent it on videogames because there's this thing going on in World of Warcraft right now that's useful for getting a lot of my sadly neglected characters up to max level in a very short time. But then it's like the rat and the cheeto button and I lay around malnourished after from overdoing it. That said, haha I finally have a level 70 priest (a pandaren named Odan, whose name like his twin sister Odango I stole from Ann's great Hot Fuzz/Ranma fusion fic that for a non-small amount of years I thought was based off a real anime about fighting police bears) and yet MORE hunters.

I've been watching movies, as is my wont. Here is a brief summary of ones I have seen for the first time and not in chronological order:

  • Halloween: I liked it. It was pretty thin on plot but no regrets on watching it. Spent some time reflecting on the High School Kid voice enunciation from that era it REALLY used.

  • Friday the 13th: Liked it. Spent a fair bit of it rooting for a specific character to die and was denied until nearly the end. I will argue that Jason *was* the killer due to possession.

  • American Psycho: I liked it. The Huey Lewis monologue was fantastic and thanks to instagram links I've been given my mind auto-translated everything about Bateman's facial care and exercise routine into a high pitched Japanese girl's voice.

  • Escape from New York: Liked it. However every time I said 'I like this character, I hope they don't die' they died two seconds later. Surprisingly satisfying ending. Loved how Snake's hair was always beautifully conditioned and wavy, despite it all.

  • Bram Stoker's Dracula: Liked it. Beautiful costumes and sets. Keanu Reeves' accent or attempt anyway was a source of joy. Winona Ryder was fantastic. A few 'well THAT wasn't in the book' but in a delighted tone. Very breasty. Did not expect them to do a version of van Helsing that humped people while cackling about killing.

  • Nightmare on Elm Street: Liked it. Found the kids friendships pretty nice to watch. Ending was 'oh holy shit'. Had the same Teen Enunciation of the Era going on.

  • Polite Society: This movie was fantastic. I laughed so hard during it. The action scenes were so good. Loved it. Characters were super enjoyable.

  • Some Like It Hot: Very fun! Enjoyed the scenes where they were just actively lying to eachother and being like 'oh my god, I'm super into this'. I believe in my heart that the women's band just assumed they were trans and were like 'yeah, we're cool with it'

  • Alien: Liked it! Good haunted house horror. They really nailed its ending too.

  • Aliens: Liked it! Good action movie. Really liked Newt. As a result I will not be watching Aliens 3.

  • Terminator: Fantastic. Good slasher flick. I need to watch Terminator 2. My personal theory is that John Connor's father was actually the guy who stood her up at the beginning of the movie.

  • Singin' in the Rain: Liked it! Absolute delight! The characters were fantastic but I will say that while I was totally willing to accept random dance numbers, the kindly I'm just a little birthday boy studio head strained my belief.

  • Death on the Nile: The one with Maggie Smith, Angela Lansbury, and Mia Farrow. Except for the random Wacky Ethnic character that made me try to will myself to death while I was watching with a friend, I really loved this. The costumes were beautiful, the acting was great, and I really got the impression the casting director was given a mandate for only the biggest eyes.

  • Say Anything: Liked it! It's the movie where the guy holds up the boom box and this movie was pretty confusing because everyone acted like he was the scum of the town but he was a pretty ideal boyfriend to my eyes. Times really have changed.

  • Casablanca: Oh THIS is why it's a classic. I really liked it. The dialogue in it was clever and I was really invested in how the plot was going to go down, even though I knew the major twist. Also it's funny as hell during the scenes where Humphrey Bogart was meant to be carefree and in love he still had the exact same stone-faced somewhat sour expression that my wild theory is that he needed glasses.

  • To Have and Have Not: I think this was the same movie as above? Anyway, I liked it.

  • The Maltese Falcon: I liked it. But at some point they were just fucking with Sam Spade to fuck with him. He was their cat toy.

  • The Long Goodbye: With Elliot Gould. The soound mixing on this was AMAZING. The voices were so clear and crisp. I found Philip Marlowe to be very charming and the mystery kept me really engaged. The ongoing symbolism of how he can't even keep a cat happy was noted.

  • The Big Sleep: My friend Vali that I watched this with described this as 'just vibes' and I think she may have been right. Lots of fun though. Bogart delivers dialogue so nicely and Bacall is a classic for a reason. I need to watch more mystery movies.

  • Mitchells vs the Machines: FINALLY watched this. Really liked it. Solid movie about problems with your dad with added furby jokes and fantastic animation. Also a really unique media version of a sibling relationship. Lots of debate on the age of the brother amongst people I talked about this movie with.

  • Scream: Did not enjoy. It was like the horror movie equivalent of a jukebox musical and was somehow mean-spirited and twee in the same moment. I would rather have watched the movies it was being referential about instead of being a movie on its own.

crantz: Anne Shirley looking wistful out a window. (anne of green gables wistful)
Every few weeks I get these godawful migraines that wipe me out.

The internet's gotten so small these days. I used to be able to browse around all these things to read and look at when my brain was doing the tiger pacing thing but now I have like... one social media site that has a slow update rate and I dunno, etsy sometimes. I finish what I can do on Flight Rising, read my webcomics, and then after that there's nothing else I can do besides going back and forth like some sort of hand twitch.

I miss webpages! I miss fun stuff everywhere to casually look at. I have games to play, stories to read, shows to watch, but it involves a lot more from me than passive browsing.

Also, fun canon fact about CSI Miami: the search engine they use to find all their incredibly accurate and deeply invasive information requests is called 'discover-it-all'
crantz: Two stuffed hamsters with a real hamster in the middle. (hamster one of us is a spy)
I became a ginger today! I may have to go back for a trim though - she didn't cut off all the previously bleached bits from when it was pink and yellow and that means that part of my hair on top is VERY BRIGHT and maybe I don't like that as much a few hours after the fact as I did at the time. That's on me.

I'm (hopefully, stuff's Going On but I do have tickets purchased) going to Texas to see the eclipse with my girlfriend. She promised me she's gonna make me a rainbow crepe cake, guys.

I took a PH for FFFX and did a 10 page comic for it. That makes it the longest single-story comic I've ever done!

You can find it here on my Fortunato* account (it's bully/nerd, as per the prompt)!

I'm nearly done my Study of Myth classes and it's involved reading Freud for the first time and I didn't realize people were really underselling how weird he is to me.

*Fun fact: I love Cask of Amontillado jokes but this account is actually named after an enemy mob in City of Heroes, the Fortunatas, but masculinized. As it was originally intended for City of Heroes OC fic. It's where everything that is different from my usual output goes. Not a secret account!
crantz: Painting of a woman with a jellyfish. (maiden and jellyfish)
Note: May not be totally accurate because my technique is 'paste list into excel sheet and scroll to final column' and not much editing.

Statistics: I have 139 works on my Ao3 account and 77 fandoms between them! I have a second account (links to my main account, not secret!) that I'm not truly counting for the purposes of this, but I'm bringing up because I feel it helps cushion the fandom number in case of counting errors.

I write a LOT in exchanges because I like knowing my fic is seen by at least one person (recipient) but the end result is I've never really been monofannish about my output. My largest fandoms are Original Work (almost entirely ghost stories), Pokemon, and Chronicles of Chrestomanci.

I do have some semi-stalled fics I've been working on for my own stuff, one is 5 Explanations for Horatio Caine which involves a coked up fairy godmother and a World of Warcraft fic that's mostly done except I want to illustrate it that's going up on my other account.
crantz: Miguel from El Dorado plays his guitar (El Dorado)
I don't post here much but I have been keeping a daily pen and paper diary for the past few years. I'm near the end of my current one and realized I didn't have a back up ready and all the journals at the local store are grid or bullet and I wanted ruled for the gsm I like anyway - I had to order from amazon. It's a LEUCHTTURM1917 in this really cute baby duck yellow. I try to keep them at varying colours to make it easier to pick them out of a lineup, as it were.

It started because I wanted to justify buying this really expensive notebook that had a diary thing set for five years in a row at a glance and I thought that was cool but it turned out that while I could consistently keep a diary, I needed much more space to write than was provided in the diary I liked.

Here it is if anyone's interested in the 5 year one: https://www.jetpens.com/Midori-5-Year-Diary-Embroidered-Beige/pd/29115

It's so beautiful. I will not be getting it, I suspect. But it's a cool concept.

There's a storm going on outside! Which means my AMAZING PLANS to go to the grocery to get some salami for my lil' snack bags is a bust. Oh well. At least I've got yogurt.

I'm a yogurt guy now.

Every single prompt is for fanfiction and/or meta. I do not need a conventional narrative for my gift and some of my favourite worldbuilding fics have been things like book catalogues. I had a Very Embarrassing Day but thankfully my entire class had the same Embarrassing Day as me and once the teacher stopped laughing at us being so aghast that Edward Burnett Tylor had such backwards opinions in 1970, she promised to tell us next time when the guy we were studying was actually the founder of British Anthropology from the 1800s who died in 1917.

Why is this so embarrassing?

Well, my major is anthropology.

And I looked up his ANCIENT PHOTO to show to Ann to complain about him.

The literature, religion, and history majors had excuses for the mistake.*

Hallo hallo, it's my fic round up since my last post and there's only been two fics since then but I'm pretty pleased with them! They're both near the same word count and together come just short of 6000 words!

I've added commentary and regrets (although to be clear the regrets about paths I couldn't take, not about the stories themselves. I like what I wrote and I'm glad I wrote it)

All Soul's Night (3038 words) by Rosencrantz
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Cold Case (US TV 2003)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Original Female Character(s)/Original Female Character(s
Characters: Lilly Rush, Scotty Valens
Additional Tags: ghost story, i acknowledge the damn end of episode ghosts at great length, Drug Use, Murder, Mystery, Religious Fanaticism, Case Fic, Canon Typical Evidence Collection, Trick or Treat: Trick, Homophobia, Child Murder, Implied/Referenced Child Abuse, Canon typical levels of all of the above
Summary:

Solve the case. See the ghost. Give it a nod. Music starts. Credits roll.

Except this time the ghost doesn't go away.

Commentary: I watched a LOT of Cold Case during a personal offline crisis this past year and as a result spent a lot of time going 'hey, people are actually SEEING the ghosts at the end of these episodes' and go to the one where a ghost threw a football to a living guy and then I just waited for my chance to write a Halloween story.

Regrets: I was too worn out from everything to also write a bunch of short pokemon horror stories even though a ton of good ghost pokes were nominated this year.

Tintin and the Tomb (2891 words) by Rosencrantz
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Tintin (Comics)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tchang Tchong-Jen | Chang Chong-Chen/Tintin
Characters: Tchang Tchong-Jen | Chang Chong-Chen, Milou | Snowy, Tintin (Tintin), Nestor (Tintin), Archibald Haddock
Additional Tags: Case Fic, Injury Recovery, Future Fic, Tchang became a reporter
Summary:

Tchang and Tintin meet up while chasing their respective stories.

Commentary: This was one that I kept plugging at way after what I thought was the final version was in. I was having a hard time with school (I ended up getting straight As!) and it took up a lot of my mental energy. But thanks to my betas*, two friends**, and my sister*** I was able to make this into a fic I was really proud of. Also there is a *lot* of extremely innuendo phrases in Tintin in Tibet, posted here:

Regrets: I had another fic for Yuletide for someone else that had to be abandoned in the end because I just didn't have the bandwith to do two. Hopefully next year I can juggle more plates.

So basically I hope 2024 is a lot more fictionally fruitful for me - I need to get back on my webcomic too, I want to post more non-exchange stuff, etc - but that will rely on outside factors giving me the mental resources. I'm very glad I was able to meet my commitments this year but next year I want to surpass just that level.

I'm also grateful that I keep getting assignments I'm really excited about!

* me: 'HEY HOW FAST CAN YOU DO AN IN-DEPTH BETA WITH NO WARNING' them: 'let's ROCK AND ROLL'
** 'Tell me everything you know about King Arthur's Tomb' and 'Is there anything this ending could use to be less 'story's over, go home now'?'
*** 'Your Haddock seems... very peaceful. You should change that' (and I did, reader, I did)

The prompts! )
crantz: Painting of a woman reading in bed with an amused expression. (reading in bed)
Salut.

I did NOT achieve my goal of reading 30 books this year and it doesn't look like it's gonna happen in the next week. But the important thing is that I had aspirations to reach a tiny fraction of what I was capable of in my youth, like being able to do midair somersaults without killing myself. I could do that once too.

Yuletide is about to reveal and I'm pretty jazzed about that. I've just put in my nominations for Candyhearts Exchange. And I've got the files uploaded for a fic I've been meaning to do about dwarven artifact catalogues from a default I did ages ago.

I need to wrap my mom's Christmas present. It's been a weird holiday season with all the chemo and stuff but I hope it goes well. We're having Chinese food instead of the traditional cultural feast and on actual Christmas day we're having food from her favourite Indian restaurant.

The cats, as a side note, have been *extremely* cute this year.
crantz: Adorable tiny owl looking unamused. (owl unamused)
I think one of the most annoying things in my life right now is that I have a chatroom I enjoy but one of the mods is a human ChatGPT and I can only take her responding to stuff I say based on keywords that ping her brain and Shit She Made Up for so long until my psychic powers emerge and she is left as naught by a burnt crisp in her computer chair.

This message brought to you by me giving up on her stopping trying to pretend she's an expert on the work I was doing and wasting my time as I kept having to correct the basic concepts that her source was 'I made it up' and I claimed I was going to bed, even though I'd been enjoying talking about it with two other people. Although they had both gone silent when she *really* got in her act so I was just the last to surrender.
crantz: Owl with tufts doing a wink. (owl wink)
With the DW points sale.

I'm not Benedict anymore, I'm Crantz!

I was previously using Benedict after my city of heroes character Benedict Jones, but it was just too confusing even after like, a decade.
