God, I love CSI Miami. It's not like, good, but I love it. It's a fever dream version of CSI: Original Flavour and CSI: NY.

Observations:

The CSIs Miami are like indoor cats. They keep escaping the lab and killing the local wildlife (citizens of Florida).

Horatio Caine has two emotions and you will get to experience them both:

Emotion 1: Oh god my son might have killed someone HE CAN'T GO BACK TO JAIL
Emotion 2: I will personally defeat the Russian mob with my bare fists.

I am pretty sure every CSIs Miami is a republican. Calleigh for sure.

The show keeps narrating that Horatio Caine will protect all the little children, defend all women, and personally end racism. What Horatio does in practice is blow up boats with rockets while hanging upside down from helicopters.

Horatio and Delko's murder vacation in South America that is revisited in a later season where Horatio murders his way out again in a five minute episode intro and is never mentioned again haunts me in ways I'm not sure how to articulate.

I've really gotta finish that fic I'm working on, 5 Explanations For Horatio Caine.

I missed out on attending my anthropology of ghosts and hauntings class in costume this morning because I was ill, *but* I logged onto bluesky today to see that one of my favourite artists, Kelly Turnbull, had drawn me into a panel in her latest comic! In the exact costume I had planned to wear today!

We're not friends or anything (I'm just a fan) and the context is I had previously volunteered a photo of myself in it for another page she'd done when she needed a crowd scene and she re-used it for another crowd.

I am delighted!

In other news, it looks like I'm sleeping in tomorrow instead of going to clay because I now have a band-aided thumb due to circumstances I'm not quite sure what happened. In any case, I need bare skin to shape clay and I'd rather not go in around clay dust until I'm sure it's completely healed. So hopefully I can go in on Friday and get my tiny kittens done.

I bought the Creepy and Eerie archives off Humble Bundle and the files are 500mb+ each so there's no way I can save them all to my pc for backup. So I need 2 things: MORE usb sticks and a labelmaker to tell all my usb backups apart.

I will go mad with power the second I have a labelmaker, btw. Rip-roaring wild. Things will be labeled excessively.

I had fun in City of Heroes this october, doing lots of trick or treating but I didn't manage to achieve my goal of never having to lead a league. There was a cascade of crisis on the last league I was on and I found myself trying to organize people to the point I was suddenly in charge of the league and micromanaging everything to keep it in place until the very last second where I promoted the wrong (but still level 50) person to league lead and then quit and fled.

My character was Supervising Unit A and someone said of my leadership: "You know how to use excel sheet formulas in real life, don't you"
crantz: Owl with tufs tilting its head. (owl headtilt)
All they want to do is draw City of Heroes fanart. I am like, I already got an extension on this essay and I am NOT drawing the fanart so I'm sort of stuck in this push pull stasis state whereupon I'm going to quietly expire.

I feel like my adhd meds had a serious misfire that I can't get off the tracks.

It's for a cool class though - Anthropology of Ghosts and Hauntings.

We made our professor squee by telling her that the particular floor, not one she had taught on before, was known for being haunted.

Hello, thank you for reading my letter! I'm Rosencrantz on AO3

I took a look into the other fandoms available for Yuletide this year and I found a lot with interesting premises I didn't know well enough to ask for but loved the concept, so I'm offering them up here as AU/Plot ideas if you want to use them! I'll explain after each one what I liked about it.

  • Haunted House Flippers - I love haunted houses, I love the idea of the characters having to deal with one for some sort of refurbishing or selling it

  • Welcome To Our Village, Please Invade Carefully - non-catastrophic alien invasion that is awkward sounds fun

  • Batman: Wayne Family Adventures - Mundane, family stuff that still deals with the more wild aspects of canon

  • Clue - someone in this room... IS THE KILLER

  • Epcot/Disney Rides - theme park stuff. Sounds fun.

  • Japanese Local Hero City Mascots - Being a mascot, being hunted by a mascot, strange shenanigans involving mascots

  • Humans are Space Orcs - Humans and how they can be unique in a setting is interesting to me

  • When you see a lore video for a franchise you know nothing about - I would love, especially in worldbuilding prompts, see the characters from the outside.

  • X-Files - someone trying to figure out their deal

  • Jeeves and Wooster - silly social shenanigans

Exchanges I have loved that would also make fic prompts:

  • Alternate Universe Exchange (using the fandom list above as ideas)

  • Invisible Libraries (fiction of fiction from inside the universe)

  • Epistolatory (fiction told entirely through documents, ephemeral)

I enjoy: casefic, spooky, adventure, romance, worldbuilding, and stories that could only take place in the canon.

DNW: Dub/noncon, underage (-18/-18 sexual, -18/+18 anything), my chosen characters being the villain of the fic.

crantz: Shakespeare from Kate Beaton saying 'read my latest, it is god damn glorious' (read my latest)
Works update! Hi!

I'm up to 136 works on my main ao3 account (I have a second with a few more. It's not a secret account, it's called Fortunato if you want to look it up) and I'm pretty chuffed. I've started doing art as well as fic and here's the latest stuff I've really enjoyed that I did!

FIC:

The first is a f!Hades fic (Greek Mythology) and an adaptation of the myth of the time Theseus and Pirithous tried to kidnap Persephone. I had a lot of fun writing it and I used Ann, Morbane, and Vali as my betas for it because each has specific skills that really helped me polish the fic. I am so grateful for my friends. Another beta I've been using frequently is my friend Karios, who is a most excellent chap. I spent a lot of time thinking about my conception of the underworld for Roots and Serpents and exactly how much Hades actually interacts with the world above when everything comes to him eventually.

For the second choice, Meet Solve was a Columbo/Murder She Wrote crossover that I was very excited to write because I am so very fond of these shows. I spent a lot of research time watching until I could hear their voices in my head and I felt so rewarded when I got feedback that says I captured it. Ann was an integral beta for this as she helped me figure out how to improve the mystery, fill in characterization, and provided some very funny lines I totally ripped off without credit except I'm crediting now.

The third choice is a Night Vale fanfic about the Weird Scouts for a fic exchange I love that's about worldbuilding - I used my experience as a Brownie and Girl Guide to go through the process of badge acquisition. Did you know I had totally full sashes during my terms? Go me. Note: I was not a Scout, these are Canadian specific organizations, so I'm afraid Night Vale briefly became Canadian for this fic. I was so into Night Vale once, I've even gone to a bunch of the live shows, and while I've fallen out of touch with it to a degree I had a great time listening to the research episodes I chose. The Ghost Story live show one was heartbreaking.

I... am not sure who beta'd my last fic choice, Ben Reilly Gets Some Paperwork Done, because while I cite they existed I don't give their name. Sometimes a beta will ask you don't do that because they don't want other people to know they offer beta services but I hope I didn't just forget to put their name on. I'd feel pretty bad if I did. Okay, so this is another worldbuilding fic where I got to think hard on the fact that a lot of characters in the Marvel universe don't legally exist or have paperwork. Rogue probably has some by now as she like, was born to a real family and probably got a ride to her hometown to get her birth certificate, but Gambit's a baby stolen from a hospital by a cult, everything he has is a complete fake. So what about a clone like Ben Reilly? How would he do it? Two chats I was in gave me a ton of GREAT suggestions on how I could commit identity fraud that I used part of - halfway through plotting them I remembered that this was a superhero story and I should absolutely use what makes Ben Reilly Scarlet Spider so I had him do stuff that could only work in his universe. The rest of the fic heavily cites events from X-Men's Inferno storyline where Havoc spends a lot of the event in a shirt where the front has been ripped off for maximum summersnipple.

Described this fic to my beta as: Ben Reilly commits document fraud, then watches Mr. Sinister and Havoc have a flamewar on usenet. It's an angst fic about identity issues.

ART:

I've been doing art now! It's fun. The first is the first ever porn I've ever made and it's retro pixel style so feel free to let that measure how excited you get. I love Darkside Detective so much and I love that it's a regular feature in exchanges.

The second involved a lot of careful staring at David Marciano's hairline to draw this picture (and then doodlepilogue) of Vecchio, Fraser, Jessica Fletcher, and Dief. On one hand I think I should have used an actual outfit reference for Jessica's outfit, on the other I think the world is improved by my artistic impression of 90s fashion mores.

crantz: Sherlock looking askance. (sherlock o rly)
Hi! I'm Rosencrantz and thank you for looking at my letter! I hope my ideas fit into 300 or so words for a nice little ficlet but I'm also open to longer fic as well as treats.

DNW: Dub/noncon happening to or performed by the tagset characters. For example, if you did a CSI Miami story and did a case in it, the case could involve that as long as it didn't happen to Horatio Caine. Underage (18+/18- anything, 18-/18- sexual)

FIC LIKES: Casefic, ghost stories, spooky stories, 'what if things went right?', humour, mysteries, gen to explicit*, lore heavy stuff, and Halloween-y themed stuff.

*I'm sorry, I don't have a kink list of things I like or dislike. I will tell you that I am okay with Tehd going down to bone town in the many ways possible for a Forsaken.

ART LIKES: I love cartoony stuff, I love realistic stuff, I love bright colours, dull colours, I like pictures that tell a story, I like illustrations, and I like both digital and traditional media equally. A particular fondness I have is for stuff that looks like ephemera, like old photographs, tickets, stuff that would be a prop (so a drawing of something that was relevant to a tale) as well as less ephemeral stuff like something that looks like a painting on a wall in-world.

World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, Cold Case, CSI, CSI Miami )
crantz: Painting of a woman reading in bed with an amused expression. (reading in bed)
And have been for MONTHS except it's at the point of the story where it keeps getting interrupted by the two teen leads having sex and it's just godawful. I'm not against sex in books, but I don't want to hear about *their* sex, in particular. This is a horror novel. Please let them be eaten by the dark forces or something already. I am sick of your hormones and need to be scared now. It's called The House At The Bottom Of The Lake or something similar.

In other news, paint pens (poscas) are lots of fun to play with. I might even get good at them if I keep at this fiddling.

My webcomic (hamsterwheel.art EDIT: ORIGINAL URL WAS WRONG OH GOD) is now at 36 comics, which is nice. I need to do more.

I got a new computer for videogame reasons and I have played uhhh second life, world of warcraft, 20 minutes of cultist simulator (I died), and I dressed up my Among Us guy as an attempt to make their thumbnails work on my desktop again but well, it looks like my desktop will be iconless.

I did NOT already break it hush hush hush hush.

Smut likes and dislikes: Instead of an exhaustive list (because I really don't know myself), I'm gonna just suggest you play it safe. The only hard nos are my DNWs.

Okay I wrote the subject then realized I wanted to eat and now it's 8 am.

This past few months I've made a lot of comics, a lot of little clay figurines, and a reasonable amount of stories.

I've also done school stuff!

Not bad, not bad.

Spring is finally sprunging, which is nice. It's very wet outside but soon I'll be able to walk on the sidewalks again and my restlessness can be walked off with the potential of being mugged by a jackrabbit.

I've been watching Cold Case and Abbott Elementary which led me to a delightful factfinding journey to discover which state Philadelphia was in. It's Pennsylvania! I wasn't expecting that. I'm not sure what I actually expected, though.

I've been doing a reasonable amount of stuff over on my mastodon.art account: https://mastodon.art/@jeancabot

Twitter keeps being in a state of dead but not dead or about to die but ah, nevertheless but I find I'm not particularly invested in what happens. I'll keep reading and enjoying art on there until it explodes, is the plan.

Hi! I'm Rosencrantz on AO3 and thank you for reading my letter!

My DNWS are: dub/noncon and underage (sexual under 18/under 18, anything under 18/over 18)

My fandom specific DNWS are:

Pokemon: Human/Pokemon
Dinotopia: Anything that pushes Dinotopia into dystopia

My specific DNW note for Sailor Moon is:

I am aware of Usagi and Mamoru's relationship in regards to my underage DNW and to stick by this DNW, I ask only that you set anything happening in the story/meta you have written post-18 for Usagi if you go that way. You do not have to pretend canon didn't happen.

For every fandom, I have asked for fic and meta. This means I'm happy with narrative, documents, historical notes, any of the sort. If you want to blend fic and meta, I'm pleased to receive that. That's part of the reason I chose both, so you didn't have to worry about the dividing line. Though I did not ask for art and do not want that as the only fill, if you want to include illustrations that's perfectly fine with me! Any art skill is fine, because it's what the in universe character would be doing.

Likes: I enjoy adventures, academic notes (an exceptional fic I got one year was just book catalogue notes!), histories, ethnolographic style things, emotional interactions, families interacting, pets interacting, joyful things, spooky things, news reports, journal entries, letters to others.

Hey everybody!

I'm taking a break from studying for a biology midterm to tell you that hedgehogs have almost double the amount of chromosomes as a human - 90 to our 46!

Incidentally, a campbell dwarf hamster has 28 and a syrian hamster has 52.

No reason I'm bringing them specifically up!

I'm easing into the holidays. Sending out cards. Buying videogames for family in the steam sale. Not being able to buy videogames for my American friends because steam is region locked for buying sometimes.

Entry briefly delayed by text from my father that sounded incredibly dire but he just needed tech support. My grandma recently had a stroke so you can understand if I'm a little jumpy if I get 'tell me when you get this text' texts.

Okay uhh.

Oh fuck, it's 11 pm. I need to study.
crantz: Jack Chick panel of the devil saying to keep partying, you'll never regret it. (satan says keep partying)
So right now I'm in The End Game of the term. Gotta finish my final projects for clay, gotta study for (and pass?) the final test and exam for biology, gotta gotta gotta.

Which means my body has been having weekly migraines and dizzy spells!

Anyway, so while I'm dealing with that I'm also trying to 'experience joy' - I've finished two books (the first Mrs. Jeffries and The Final Deduction by Rex Stout) and I'm setting up a blog like my old blogs mybookreport.net and hasmterbandit.com and goodlife.hamsterbandit.com all as one thing (url chosen and installed, I just gotta... do the thing) because what is life if not a littering of crumbs behind you of past endeavors?

I dunno what I'm doing, honestly. But the url .blog was on sale and that's what's happening right now.

I've been watching a show made this decade, The Midnight Club based on a book (series?) by Christopher Pike about terminally ill teenagers telling eachother ghost stories but there was also a cult at one point and I'm quite enjoying it. I had to stop mid-episode right before Amesh's story and haven't been able to pick it up again yet.

Due South is also on Netflix now.

I'm also doing videogame stuff. My City of Heroes sgmates got me back into World of Warcraft - kind of a paying the piper thing. They played with me on CoH on the understanding I'd come back with the new expansion back for WoW. We're dragons now. Still playing CoH because cold dead hands.

And I'm installing Mass Effect: Legendary Edition because I well and truly fucked up my first run and doomed my entire crew in ME2 and didn't have a back up file and it's been literally years so I'm just gonna reroll my Shepard as a girl and romance Thane.

WoW and ME are HUGE game files. They average 100gb each. So I'm installing them on a SSD I had for WoW before I quit and I hope this helps with my pc being so sad and 'why are you making me run such heavy things I'm just a little guy whine whine'

I still need to finish Outer Worlds, which I love but I've been slowly dying.

I got Pokemon Scarlet today. We spite ordered from gamestop after amazon declared we wouldn't get our pre-ordered copies until the 28th and it was at the house by the end of the day and I admit, I was impressed. I played for ten minutes, got a migraine, went to bed. My character is Areli Mulberry, my latest poke-mulberry. I haven't got my first pokemon yet, but it's going to be Quaxly (Quaxley?). I know surprisingly few spoilers.

I finished the Blackwell series. It made me cry human tears.

Book thoughts!

Mrs. Jeffries - the premise of this mystery series is that Mrs. Jeffries is the housekeeper of kindly Inspector Witherspoon and actually solves the mysteries for him with the help of the rest of the staff. He's unaware of how strongly she guides him and is convinced everyone will find out he's a fraud. It's fairly charming although I get a kick out of the times Mrs. Jeffries turns to the camera and goes 'I actually disapprove strongly of Victorian values and politics but I don't dare say it. But just so you know, I'm on YOUR side.' and truly, it's charming.

Anyway, a solid cozy. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.

The Final Deduction - Rex Stout - this is my first Nero Wolfe and I have to admit I didn't expect how easy I was able to imagine a passionate story between Archie and Nero. Anyway, the mystery was fine. They're both kind of dicks. I've got others I intend to read. I liked it.
crantz: Kitten meows (rawr! by fritters)
I've got at least two games I've been excited about coming out at the end of November and also that's when all my major exams and stuff are, minus one December one.

If I fail biology because I was too focused on pokemon biology (it has evolution, okay) that's actually very unlikely to happen but I had a moment of Concern.

So I'm on my last project for pottery (turtle jar, butterfly lid) and last module for biology (it was a three module course), and for some weird reason my hand is hurting a lot while I type this, so that's the end of this entry.

Peace.
crantz: Sherlock looking askance. (sherlock o rly)
Which means my attempts to acquire iced coffee have... stalled on account of storms.

You don't understand, I wanted it *now*.

The cat keeps making us put her on her leash and show her each door in turn so she can make sure that THIS one isn't different than the other. Maybe there's summer behind one of them! We know it will never be different. We still do it for her. She is 10 pounds of House Boss.

A good friend of mine is knitting me a sweater right now and I am super excited and trying not to put pressure on her by staring at her through the email window, but I am also super excited.

I've been jamming on Second Life a lot lately and making all sorts of weird little avatars. I think my favourite is my Hamsdeer avatar, which is a hamster with antlers and fawn spots. Copyright ME. Yeah!

I commissioned art of a city of heroes character - Beloved Emily, my ghost, who I didn't play this Halloween like I was hoping to because I spent all of October dying inside! So I didn't play my already dead stuff! School has been ROUGH but I endure because school is also finite.

Speaking of school stress, I am in a weeder biology course so by actual metrics and grades I'm doing very well compared to my classmates, the fact the numbers are not As like I'm used to is killing my soul piece by piece. I'm one of those people who wants to be a perfectionist but isn't actually very good at it.

I'm also taking a clay course as advised by my archaeology professor because pottery is like, THE big human artifact and it's a good idea for me to learn more about how the material works and it turns out I'm not very good at sculpting 3d objects! So while I've definitely achieved my goal of learning the media (I have nothing but respect for our ancestors who figured out how this shit works, if it had been me we'd be drinking coffee out of leaves to this day) but let's just say I'm lucky we're being graded on effort and creativity and not end product beyond 'not horribly cracked/exploded'.

I'm still regularly keeping a paper journal. Haven't missed a day yet since I started. It's sort of interesting looking back on these and seeing what I thought it was important for me to know in the future. My memory is so bad it's like 'oh good, I'm being written to by a ghost'.

My grandpa died? Did I mention that? Anyway, that was rough and awful and sad and I miss him. I was very close to him. I think I missed a few week to months around that period. People were very understanding. I appreciate that I've got friends and fellow mods in the stuff I'm in charge of that are willing to pick up my slack when I can't handle it.

Last thing that's really worth updating on is I watched The Thing for the first time and now I have another cultural touchstone added to my collection. I really liked it! It didn't scare me which was a shame but it was really fun to watch and the environmental storytelling when they went to the other camp was superb.

I wrote some fic for some exchanges too, but I'm waiting on reveals for Trick or Treat before posting about them.
