What I Did On My Birthday - Afterbattle report

My birthday went off swimmingly. Go team. Cake was super tasty - Banana cake with strawberry filling. 'Banana split cake' she called it. I think if I get it again, I'm going to also ask for a layer of chocolate.

Violet messaged me around 8 just after I'd excused myself if I still wanted to do movie night we'd cancelled because it turned out she was up for it so we watched The Outsiders. The Outsiders is based off the novel by the same name by S E Hinton who swears that it is a deeply heterosexual tale so stop taking a queer lens to it.

As Violet and I watched these boys grapple with eachother semi nude, cuddle in the night, and talk about their feelings and the most vestigial girl ever showing up once in a while, we reflected that Hinton was right, truly there was no story more heterosexual than this tale of Johnny and his Ponyboy.

SE Hinton being into Supernatural but not admitting that her characters are super gay for each other is the absolute funniest thing that's ever happened to an author

PS. If you enjoyed The Outsiders the movie on any level, you may also enjoy Rumble Fish, which was filmed around the same time with much of the same cast, is also by Coppola, and is also kind of gay from what I remember

I am so sorry to this woman whose denial made up 80% of mine and Violet's commentary on that movie. I feel I wronged her because clearly that was a deeply, deeply hetero story.

I will absolutely check out Rumble Fish.
