I've done a lot of Star Wars puzzles as room decor, my 1000 piece one took months. Your poor grandparents XD Did they ever put together the one you gave them?
Really love the anecdotes about your grandparents, they sound like wonderful people. I have a rash from yardwork weeds right now and bought a lotion to try and deal with it today. The smell reminded my of my paternal grandfather, who always had some salve or balm for whatever ailed you. He liked to tell a story about how when he was a baby, he was very sick and the doctor thought there was nothing more that could be done and he was going to die. His mom rubbed him down in Vick's vapor rub and wrapped him up, and he recovered. At least that's how I remember it.
