“Excitable little fellow,” said Gandalf, as they sat down again. “Gets funny queer fits, but he is one of the best, one of the best—as fierce as a dragon in a pinch.”
-Gandalf throws Bilbo to the dwarves/explains away why Bilbo is screaming in terror in The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
I've read the Hobbit before, but it was years ago. I'd just finished the Lord of the Rings trilogy to join an rp game and I thought 'hey, why not?'
I think I should have read the Hobbit first, if only because I think I really would have enjoyed being able to think of the LotR books as 'Hobbit: The Next Generation', as Gloin (Gimli's father), Thranduil (Legolas' father), and Bilbo's (adopted for Bilbo, Frodo) sons go on an adventure together.
Right now I'm on page 27 and the dwarves (this story has dwarves, folks!) have just arrived and had two songs (this story has songs!) which I don't remember how I felt about the first time around, but I loved here. I was giggling at their tormenting Bilbo song as they did the dishes (this story has dishes!), and was entranced by the dwarf song and music about recovering their gold from the dragon. Bilbo's reaction was lovely and has been this whole thing. From when he shows a bit of spirit to Gandalf, to his fussiness, and when he decides he's gonna show Gloin (HI, GIMLI'S DAD) that he, Bilbo, is a badass. Really.
I do remember that at one point reading this I shipped Bilbo with one of the dwarves, but blasted if I can remember now. I will either never remember (I had Notions in my youth), or the text will remind me itself and god help you all, I will talk about that too. I know 4sure it's not Thorin, though. Thorin is the dwarf leader. He talks over Gandalf.
Summary Thus Far: Gandalf's decided Bilbo is going to have an adventure and Bilbo is starting to rise to the situation, with the encouragement of 13 singing, cheerful dwarves, all of whom have brightly coloured detachable party hoods.
Starting to finally look forward to the idea of there being a movie, only so that they keep the songs in, though. I want to hear the dwarves' music.
