Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: FAQ: The "Snake Fight" Portion Of Your Thesis Defense (McSweeney's Post) - Luke Burns
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: original teacher & original student
Characters: Original Characters
Additional Tags: Snakes, Academia, a bit too close to reality, Epistolary, Emails
Summary:
Notes after the fact: Does knowing that I drew a lot of this from my emails with my professor (who went above and beyond this year after this fic was written, please don't think ill of her) explain why I'm taking off winter term this year?
My biggest regret is that the 'snesis' joke was added in after fic reveals and that I did not think to put any other snake-name jokes in the fic itself. I feel like I let myself now. Snet mysnelf snown.
The fic, however, was fun to write and was the result of a particularly clear prompt from the recipient. Thank you to them.
I spent a lot of time googling whether a thesis was for a master or a doctoral candidate and google mostly kept telling me what to do to defend one which mostly amounted to 'fight the fucking snake'.
Discarded snakes: Before I settled on the rat snake, I almost went with these snakes.
Also some name silliness: Fitzinger University is named after the man who described the family for garter snakes, and O. Hannah is the species name for the King Cobra.

Summary:
Notes from me: haha. yes. YES. I got Dinobot/Rattrap, I didn't dare dream that someone would write that for me when I put out that prompt. It's really in character and loads of fun. I was delighted.
The Wizard's Cape(r) (2711 words) by all_these_ghosts
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: My Little Pony (Cartoon 1984-1989)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Wind Whistler (My Little Pony G1), Masquerade (My Little Pony G1), Fizzy (My Little Pony G1), The Moochick (My Little Pony G1), Megan Williams
Summary:
Notes from me: and at the other end of the spectrum a My Little Pony fic that reads like I was watching an episode and therefore I love it. It's so good. It's tone perfect and has a lot of cute little details that made it just a great all around gift.
So as you can see this Yuletide I got really lucky! I was having a sliiiight breakdown and having such a positive experience really helped. I probably wouldn't have tried to walk into the Assiniboine if it had gone poorly so no one should worry they were my support pillar this season, but it was a nice 'oh thank goodness something fun'.
Final thoughts on Yuletide: I am one of the many Yuletide tagmods and I'm the admin for the Yuletide Discord and that all went very smoothly, all things considered! No real crisises, lots of good conversation, and I did more tagmodding this year than last year where I had a little bit of 'what if I mess it all up and explode the tagset?' anxiety for some reason.
In fact I only had to mark for correcting one of the things I approved and that was because the Mary Worth font makes it really hard to tell that Iris' last name is Beedie, not Beedle which I discovered by pure chance when the story abruptly turned to Toby repeatedly saying Iris' full name to rag on her to Mary during tagmodding.

Summary:
University websites really like to bury the useful information, like the FAQs that admit you will be fighting a snake in the arena of knowledge.
Also: Snake + Thesis = Snesis

Discarded snakes: Before I settled on the rat snake, I almost went with these snakes.
- Paradise Tree Snake - this snake is capable of flight which would have led to a 'IT'S GOING FOR MY EYES' scenario
- King Cobra - I knew the most about this snake but it felt like too much genuine danger. Did you know that its primary diet is other snakes? Wow!
- Eastern Hognose Snake - this snake plays dead and the entire 'fight' would have been trying to convince it to actually stop playing dead
Also some name silliness: Fitzinger University is named after the man who described the family for garter snakes, and O. Hannah is the species name for the King Cobra.

It's a long, boring shift on monitor duty. Fortunately, Rattrap's got some ideas for how to liven it up.
