Jul. 31st, 2011 02:56 amI finished The Magic Nation Thing by Zilpha Keatley Snyder a long while back and before I could post about it, LJ had its DDoS adventure. My review then wasn't positive, and time didn't incline me further.
The problem with this book isn't the writing. Zilpha Keatley Snyder is a wonderful writer, who can capture children very well. No, the problem was that this story read like the first chapters before the adventure happens, and then the adventure never happens. There's no big arc and it's ultimately very unsatisfying. I think what I was supposed to get for the big conflict was the main character standing up to her friend, but all that happens SPOILER is two sentences and 'let's go on our way!' END OF SPOILER.
There really wasn't even any conflict, really. It... this happened, that happened, book's over.
I am unhappy, as I'm a big fan of her other books.
IN OTHER NEWS, you remember my hobbit question? About religion? Ann Larimer provided the best answer in which apparently JRR Tolkien actively avoided religion for them so as to not add or detract from his own Catholicism. SO.
