crantz: Painting of a unicorn chained inside a fence from the painting unicorn hunt. (fantasy: unicorn hunt)
She did not look anything like a horned horse, as unicorns are often pictured, being smaller and cloven-hoofed, and possessing that oldest, wildest grace that horses have never had, that deer have only in a shy, thin imitation and goats in dancing mockery. Her neck was long and slender, making her head seem smaller than it was, and the mane that fell almost to the middle of her back was as soft as dandelion fluff and as fine as cirrus. She had pointed ears and thin legs, with feathers of white hair at the ankles; and the long horn above her eyes shone and shivered with its own seashell light even in the deepest midnight. She had killed dragons with it, and healed a king whose poisoned wound would not close, and knocked down ripe chestnuts for bear cubs.

-It's all the same to a unicorn, really. The second paragraph of The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle

Tonight I finished two books. The first, Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by PG Wodehouse was a Jeeves and Wooster book, which I didn't really feel was one of the better ones. Probably because the couple, Vanessa Cook and Orlo Potter felt like rehashes of Honoria Glossop and Roderick Spode, and maybe the lack of Jeeves (although I suppose Bertie should get a chance to solve his problems sometimes) or some other factor. I didn't dislike it, but I don't think it really enhanced my life. There wasn't even anything I wanted to quote or share.

The other book I read, which I feel much more favourable about, was The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, which put me in the conundrum of needing an icon to talk about it, but also not really wanting to spare the space to a book/author that may only be talked about once. Hence my brand spanking new fantasy catch-all icon. I'm working on a mystery and a sci-fi one next. Suggestions welcome.

ANYWAY. Oh, I loved the language in this. The plot for those that don't know, is about a unicorn who realizes she's the last in the world and sets out to find what happened to the others. She meets up with a magician along the way after she falls into some trouble, and her adventure really starts from there. There's this big, with Schmendrick the Magician and the Unicorn in the Midnight Carnival where I actually felt for a spider. It was Charlotte's Web all over again.

Book also features: Molly Grue, who is quite likeable, Prince Lir, who is adorable, and King Haggard, who is very interesting. It's a short book, barely over a hundred pages, but well worth the read. It took me a while to get around, but it takes me a while to get around to a lot of things.

And on a personal note, as some of you know I have rainbow hair and have for years. Well, I'm dying my hair back to normal, which... appears to be almost black now. Okay.

The reason for this is irritation. See, it looks great rainbow. But once that runs out and my hair grows back a little, I go through the period in-between with hair that despite being clean and fluffy, looks like someone's dumped a bucket of grease on. Uncool, how colours work. Uncool. So yeah. My hair used to be a lighter, redder brown but it looks more like my dad's (near black) now than ever. So that is your personal life update! God, I don't do those often.

Last note: There will be an update on the Fake Author story collection thing soon. I'm just going over it and working out some last bits and bobs, so I can present a coherent front.
