Reading Shadow Over Innsmouth by HP Lovecraft (read it here at Wikisource.org), origin of the Deep Ones, monsters what like to get it on with people with the reward being deformed, but immortal babies. Also fish and gold.
Three things about this story:
- Lovecraft loved his vocabulary. I could paste any paragraph from this story and you'd be like, dude loves his old-fashioned descriptive words. Surprisingly I've just had to use the dictionary app on my phone twice.
- There were some damn weird names back then. Obed, Adoniram, Onesiphorus, etc...
- Lovecraft is pretty racist. Okay, so there's this huge bit at the start when the guy is warning Narrator Dude about the horrors of Innsmouth, and he goes into this long spiel about how it might have South Asians and stuff in it, then moves on. A few paragraphs later I realize: That was supposed to be part of the horror.
Goddamnit, HP.
In any case, this is all part of my research for a Tintin fanfic I want to write. I was inspired by perusing things and seeing how many people liked Tintin In Tibet best, and wanted to see some Tintin/Chang. And I was like, I would like to write a Tintin fanfic. And perhaps I could try to work on my writing romance, because I am fuckawful at it. Human affection is not something I'm good at. It'll still be pg-rated, though, because I'm not sure I want to face the idea of writing about Tintin's penis at this stage in my life.
But mostly, I wanted to do something with Deep Ones, and I wanted to do something with the feet washing ashore in BC/Washington. Two great tastes, etc.
So it'll be primarily a mystery/adventure/horror and set in their future somewhat, because I want part of the story to involve Chang's future career somehow leading to Tintin coming at his request about the mystery. In Tintin In Tibet they encounter the abominable snowman, so I figure some Deep Ones is step 2.
