Speaking of Victorian things, I watched the new Sherlock Holmes show the other day. It was very good. Two thumbs up, etc.
A Victorian fad for moralistic vignettes preserved in alcohol has filled graveyards with large, octagonal tombs with viewing ports. Inside, deceased ancestors, impeccably dressed, are anchored to chairs and flagstones and posed in scenes of moral instruction.
Most tombs are unviewable, the alcohol inside having gone cloudy with disintegrating bodies. But one is intact, and notorious.
It features a grandmotherly, heavy woman, dressed in black clothes. She's yellowed, bloated, and clutching the bodies of children. Any dead children from her family were added to the scene until the 1950s, so she is holding on to multiple eras of dead kids.
It's meant to look comforting and maternal, but several kids have broken free of their moorings, or are falling apart.
