crantz: (hovercats)
So while I was writing out ideas for submission, it occurred to me that you know what this sounds like more than a book? A zine. A zine pretending to be a book. The Fake Author Zine is what I'm going to call it as a working title now.

I've gotten a nice amount of volunteers for this! Which is great. Not just authors, I've gotten people volunteering to edit too, which is awesome. If I get more people, I'm going to make a community to help organize people and do announcements, like schedule and updates and all that sundry stuff.

THEME: With that in mind, I'm going to re-iterate what this is about. The theme of the book is fake authors. That means the only thing your stories have to have in common with the other contributors is an outlandish author biography. It can be as short or as long as you want, as long as it's about how your author is the best thing that's ever walked on God's green earth.

GUIDELINES: As for the stories, anything that's not above a soft R (or illegal) goes. I'm hugely in favour of pulp style stuff (as my friend described, a romp through the adventures of the past, tempered with modern sensibility), which encompasses a lot of stuff, like romance, adventure, sci-fi, mystery, fantasy, etc. I even have someone considering a giant robot story. Just one caveat! No fanfiction of anything that's still in copyright. That means that you can't do Superman, but Sherlock Holmes is in the clear, capiche? You can write a story as if it was written by your fake author persona, or just write a you-story and attach a fake author bio to it. Whatever works dem mind juices.

LENGTH: Size wise, I went to my friend Bree to see what the places that publish her ask for in story size and she provided me with useful links. So here's what I went with:

Short Stories: 5,000 to 18,000 words*
Novellas: 18,001 to 35,000 words
BONUS: One sentence stories. I have an idea with these, I just need some.

LEGAL NOTE: You retain all rights to your story. The only thing you're agreeing to when you submit a story is to let me publish it in the book/zine. I will not make a profit off your work, and you are free to submit your story to publishing companies, or post for free, or whatever the heck you want.

ALSO: While I do have editor volunteers, I will encourage writers to get their own betas to make sure that their stories get as much attention as possible.

SUBMISSIONS, QUESTIONS, IDEAS, can be sent to: crantz@livejournal.com, as well as the comments here. And possibly in a community that may or not be made.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: Tentatively Jan 1st.

This is just for fun and should not be engaged in if it causes stress.

*That's flexible, because I already have one story that's a haiku coming.

As a note, since I was asked: This is print on demand, you just order the copies you want from the site. As well, I will have a free ebook version up if this pans out
