Much to my surprise,
East of the Sun and West of the Moon, was not in fact one huge story but was actually just one small fairytale in a collection of them. Perhaps I should have paid attention to the index at the top, I'd just assumed it was a chapter list.
The first part of what I read (linked above, an example of the illustrations linked below) really was just like the tale of Psyche and Eros I know, right down to the dripping of candle-wax onto the sleeping handsome prince. Only in this case, the prince has to go marry a Troll and the girl doesn't catch on fire.
I liked it, and if I am going to use it for an rp scenario, I'm going to have to modify it a bit. Parts of it made no sense. Like, if she's the youngest of her siblings, how come she looks like that in the illustrations and also her siblings are young enough to be running about and playing even though there's like, tons of them above her after she's left. I will switch her to oldest, because it would also enhance her 'I should help take care of my younger siblings by going off to live with this bear and make everyone rich'.
Of course, would I do that for my younger siblings? I suppose it depends on whether or not the bear's an asshole.
Meanwhile, the next story was
The Blue Belt aka 'This story is full of sociopaths holy shit'
Basic premise: Boy is with beggar mother. Boy finds magic belt, gets them to the house of a Troll, mother is terrified, mother then hooks up with the troll to murder her son for some damnfool reason, later son marries princess of the Arabia after murdering two maids for shits and giggles (this is shown as horrifying everyone else in the story, except for the king who is all 'whatever, they were poor people. I'll buy another').
I think that's it for fairytales for a while, except for the Itunes U ones I have loaded up on my ipod. That's where my version of
The Bamboo Cutter and the Moon-Child is, which I really like. Especially the ending. I think it would make a beautiful animated movie. I am sort of sad that my dream of being a famous animator wasn't true. :(

The North Wind gives the girl in East of the Sun and West of the Moon a ride to the far away castle where her prince is captured. LOOK AT HIS WINGS OMG
